Why It Matters

Historically, women in classical music faced systematic barriers. This has been present across performance, education, leadership, and composition.

Orchestral Bans: Major professional orchestras excluded female instrumentalists for centuries. When major U.S. orchestras adopted auditions behind a screen, the probability that a woman advanced from preliminary rounds increased by 50%. The likelihood of a female musician being selected in the final round increased threefold. (Goldin & Rouse, 2000)

Concert Programming: In the top 21 U.S. ensembles, works by just two male composers (Mozart and Beethoven) frequently outnumber the combined total of all works programmed by female composers across an entire season. (Sarah Baer, 2024)

Publication & Attribution: During the 18th and 19th centuries, works by women were frequently published under male relatives' names.

Instrument Limitations: Women were historically discouraged or restricted from playing "unfeminine" instruments. This included brass, percussion, or large woodwinds, due to posture standards.
